The Biofire Smart Gun fulfillment process involves multiple steps to ensure your Smart Gun is customized, properly fitted, and legally transferred to you. Here is what to expect throughout the process from reservation to pick up.
Step 1: Place Your Reservation
The Smart Gun fulfillment process begins when you place your reservation and pay your deposit. This secures your spot in the carefully managed manufacturing queue. Biofire fulfills orders in Batches in the sequence in which they are received. While not all orders within each Batch ship simultaneously, your place in line is determined by when you complete your reservation.
Step 2: Manufacturing Queue
You have flexibility to modify your build while waiting for your Smart Gun to enter production as many times as needed.
Customizations remain editable during this period. Whether you want to swap colors, add new accessories, or reconsider your build entirely, you can make changes until your order is finalized without impacting your place in the queue.
Please refer to the Editing Your Smart Gun Build article for a complete list of what you can modify and how to make updates.
Step 3: Finalization
You will receive an invitation from Biofire to finalize your order when your build is ready to move into manufacturing. This is your opportunity to confirm every detail before manufacturing begins.
Finalization steps:
- Confirm your final build
Review and lock in your frame color, slide color, polymer choice, and trigger selection
- Confirm accessories
Verify your accessories and choose add-ons
- Update account information
Ensure your contact details are current
- Confirm billing address
Verify where your payment method is registered
- Confirm shipping address
This is where your Grip Sizing Kit and accessories will be sent
- Review or change payment method
Update your payment information if needed
- Make final payment
Complete payment to move your Smart Gun into the production schedule
- Submit custom serial number preferences
If you chose this option during reservation, you will submit your preferred serial numbers (subject to availability and formatting requirements)
Important: Once you complete payment during finalization, your Smart Gun enters the production process and your order cannot be modified, changed, or canceled. Review everything carefully before submitting payment.
Please refer to the Finalizing Your Smart Gun Order article for detailed guidance on the finalization process.
Step 4: Grip Sizing
After finalizing your order, it is important that your Smart Gun is properly sized to the primary user’s grip. Please refer to the Smart Gun Sizing article for more information on sizing. You will receive a Grip Sizing Template at your confirmed mailing address.
Importance of Proper Grip and Fit:
- Establish reliable fingerprint sensor contact
- Improve comfort and control when handling the firearm
- Support consistent performance during use
Whether you are new to firearms or just new to the Smart Gun, please take the time to complete grip sizing correctly to ensure your Smart Gun is manufactured with the optimal fit for you.
Please refer to our Grip Sizing Template article for step-by-step guidance.
Step 5: Manufacturing and Production Standard Testing
Once the grip size is received, the Smart Gun can enter the Biofire manufacturing process. Each Smart Gun is built to the submitted specifications and reviewed against Biofire's standards before being approved for shipment.
Step 6: FFL Selection
Biofire will reach out via email requesting you to select your Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) for transfer and pickup once the Smart Gun has completed manufacturing and met Biofire's shipping standards.
FFL Requirement
While Biofire sells directly to customers, federal law requires that firearms be shipped from Biofire’s FFL to another licensed FFL dealer. This dealer will handle the transfer paperwork and conduct the required background check before releasing the firearm to you.
Choosing Your FFL
You can either:
- Select a preferred FFL dealer you already work with
- Request Biofire to locate an FFL near you
Please refer to the Federal Firearms Licenses (FFL) Overview and Federal and Local Firearms Transfer Process (FFL) articles if you are unfamiliar with the FFL process or want more information about why this step is required.
FFL Coordination
Once you select an FFL, Biofire will contact them directly. There is no need to contact the FFL directly to arrange the transfer. Biofire will coordinate the transfer with the FFL on the customer's behalf.
Step 7: Shipping and Transfer
After coordinating with your chosen FFL, Biofire will ship your Smart Gun directly to the dealer. You will receive tracking information so you can monitor the shipment in real time.
Certain states have substantial requirements that must be met before you can own a handgun, which may include licenses or waiting periods. Please make sure to review requirements for your state, county, and city to make sure that you understand requirements in advance of going to pick up your Smart Gun.
At the FFL
Once your Smart Gun arrives and is logged into the FFL's inventory, the dealer will follow their standard intake and transfer procedures. They will contact you directly.
Important: Please do not contact the FFL to request status updates. Allow the dealer to reach out to you on their timeline. This ensures transfers are handled in the order and manner their policy requires and prevents delays for you and other customers.
Step 8: Pickup and Ownership
Once the FFL completes the transfer process and you pass the background check, you are ready to pick up your Smart Gun. The dealer will release the firearm to you, and ownership officially transfers.
