Understanding the firearms transfer process ensures a smooth pickup experience when receiving your Biofire Smart Gun. Federal law requires the Biofire Smart Gun and all firearms purchased online to be transferred through a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) in your state of residency.
Customers must comply with all local and state laws to legally obtain a firearm prior to Biofire shipping the Smart Gun to your chosen FFL.

Follow all applicable local, state, and federal laws anytime when transporting your Biofire Smart Gun, whether for the first time from your FFL, or later to the range or a different home.
FFL Transfer Process
When your Smart Gun is ready to ship, the process is as follows:
- Select an FFL
Biofire will contact you to coordinate delivery through an FFL in your state of residency. Biofire can help you locate FFLs near you, or you can choose your own preferred FFL. Biofire will coordinate with the chosen FFL to ensure they process these transfers and will complete all transfer paperwork directly with them, or coordinate an alternative method if required.
- Shipping to Your FFL
Biofire will ship your Smart Gun directly to the FFL you've selected.
- FFL Notification
Your FFL will reach out to you directly when your firearm is ready for transfer, and it will not be ready to transfer immediately after arrival at the FFL. Each FFL has their own process for transfers, and some may have longer processes than others, depending on laws, ordinances, and their own internal processes. Allow the FFL time to reach out to you. Reach out to us at [email protected] if you believe that the processing time indicates that something went wrong, and Biofire can follow up with the FFL directly on your behalf.
- Prepare FFL Fees
Most FFLs charge both a transfer fee for this service, and a fee to process your background check. These fees typically range from $20 to $75, and you may be required to pay in cash. Pay this fee directly to the FFL. Confirm the fee with your chosen FFL before completing your purchase.
- Prepare Pickup Requirements
Confirm with your FFL what required documentation you will need upon pickup, and any state and local laws to be aware of for your transfer such as waiting periods or required paperwork.
FFL Pickup Process
Some states require a license and/or a mandatory waiting period before allowing a purchaser to take full possession of a firearm. Biofire recommends that you research local legal requirements in advance or call your FFL for guidance on complying with handgun transfer requirements, and be prepared for multiple visits to your FFL before you may leave with the Smart Gun if your state requires this waiting period.
The FFL should guide you through the required legal process when you arrive at your chosen FFL to pick up the Smart Gun:
- Complete Form 4473
Fill out the Firearms Transaction Record (Form 4473), which collects information about you and the firearm being transferred. Answer all questions truthfully, as providing false information is a federal crime.
- Background Check
The FFL will run your information through NICS (National Instant Criminal Background Check System). Checks can be completed quickly, though some may be delayed for further review.
- State-Specific Requirements
Depending on your state, there may be additional requirements such as waiting periods, license, safety certificates, or additional state background checks. Your FFL will inform you of any state-specific requirements.
- Final Transfer
The FFL will complete the transfer once you pass the background check and meet all applicable requirements, and you can take possession of the Smart Gun.
Items to Bring
Prepare all necessary legal requirements for picking up and taking possession of the Smart Gun:
- A valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport)
- Any state-required permits or certificates
- Payment for the FFL's transfer fee
- Any additional requirements requested by the specific FFL

Local Transport Laws
Legal requirements for firearm transport vary by state and jurisdiction. Some states require the firearm to be stored in a specific part of your vehicle (e.g., the trunk) or may require additional safety measures such as a lock. Your chosen FFL may have necessary locks for purchase.
Lockable Case Requirements
Biofire's hard case has two locking holes for added security if your order included a hard case or you chose to purchase one from Biofire, and your Smart Gun will ship in this case. Use legally approved locks when required by law for extra safety. Biofire recommends that you research local legal requirements in advance or call your FFL for guidance on complying with handgun transportation requirements.
Required Safety Devices
Your state may require a cable lock or a similar device. Understand how to use the locking mechanisms before leaving the FFL.
Responsible Storage during Transport
Keep the Smart Gun unloaded during transport. Place the Smart Gun in a secure, inaccessible location while driving, if required in your area.
