Smart Gun Ammunition Compatibility
Last updated on May 22, 2025
Biofire has conducted comprehensive reliability testing on the Smart Gun with a broad selection of commercially available 9mm ammunition—both full-metal-jacket (FMJ) and jacketed-hollow-point (JHP) cartridges.
Biofire continuously evaluates and tests ammunition to maintain a list of recommended and compatible ammunition for the Smart Gun.

Follow the product manual
- ALWAYS inspect ammunition before loading it into your Smart Gun.
- ALWAYS use ammunition that has been manufactured in accordance with SAAMI or NATO specifications from a reputable manufacturer. Your Smart Gun is designed to be used only with P or +P ammunition.
- ONLY use ammunition labeled 9mm Luger, 9mm, 9mm NATO, 9x19, 9x19mm, 9mm Parabellum, or 9mm Para.
- NEVER use any type of proof or +P+ ammunition with your Smart Gun.
- NEVER use reloaded ammunition, which could cause damage and dangerous conditions and will void the warranty.
- Firing +P and NATO ammunition may reduce the lifetime of your Smart Gun.
What is the difference between FMJ and JHP?
Full Metal Jacket (FMJ)
FMJ rounds are designed for practice, and are commonly used for range sessions.
FMJ bullets have a soft lead core encased in a harder metal shell (or "jacket"), which helps them feed reliably and stay intact when hitting a target. They’re cost-effective, widely available, and ideal for range training where you’re focused on consistency.
Jacketed Hollow Point (JHP)
JHP rounds are designed for self-defense.
Unlike FMJ, JHP bullets have a hollowed-out tip that expands on impact. This expansion causes more damage to the target and reduces the chance of over-penetration (the bullet passing through the target and hitting something beyond). However, any ammunition may over-penetrate your target. You are responsible for knowing your target and what is beyond it.
